Second Quarter:

A personal foul penalty from the Hawkeyes after a 37-yard pass from Sam Richardson to Jauan Wesley near the left sideline gave ISU a 1st-and-goal at the 10. Three plays later, Richardson found Quenton Bundrage over the middle for a 12-yard touchdown pass and the Cyclones led 10-3 with 13:12 left in the half. Richardson also carried 19 yards on the opening play of the drive to get the offense moving.

I-State opted for a controversial punt at midfield on a 4th-and-inches midway through the second quarter. Originally, it looked like a great idea as Colin Downing pinned the Hawks deep at their own seven-yard line and Dale Pierson rushed through for a sack and loss of six on first down.

However, CJ Beathard rushed for 44 yards on 2nd-and-16 and Iowa never looked back. Beathard followed up the big rush by hitting Jordan Canzeri for a 19-pass on first down. Six plays later, the Hawks got a 14-yard pass from Beathard to Tevaun Smith for a touchdown that tied the game 10-10 with just under five minutes left in the half.

The Cyclones answered with some big plays of their own on the ensuing possession. Richardson hit Trever Ryen over the middle for a 53-yard pass play on 1st-and-10. Three plays later on a 3rd-and-17 at the Iowa 29-yard line, Richardson again went over the middle in traffic to Jauan Wesley who made a one-handed catch for the touchdown. ISU went up 17-10 with 2:19 left in the half.

A fortuitous bounce on a kickoff by Cole Netten buried Iowa once again late in the first half, as it took over possession at the two-yard line. However, it was Beathard once again burning the defense with a 57-yard run down to the 30. Beathard followed with an eight-yard pass to Matt VandeBerg. However, the I-State defense came up huge on second- and third-and-shot to force a 4th-and-1 with three seconds left. Marshall Koehn kept it and rushed toward the end zone, but was tackled at the five-yard line as time ran out on the half. ISU, which will open the second half with the ball, owned a 17-10 lead at half.

Advantage: Iowa State.
