Fourth Quarter:
Big plays had bailed the Hawkeyes out of bad field position for much of the game, and it was no different on the opening possession of the fourth quarter as CJ Beathard dropped back into his own end zone on a 3rd-and-21 and hit Matt VandeBerg for a 48-yard gain. The Hawkeyes then went to Jordan Canzeri on the ground three times for 20 yards, before Beathard hit VandeBerg for nine and another fresh set of downs to the Cyclone 17.
But with Iowa primed for a critical march into the end zone it was ISU’s Darian Cotton coming up with a forced fumble on Canzeri, and Jordan Harris recovering at the seven-yard line to give the offense another shot. Cotton, playing for Qujuan Floyd at strong safety, had given up the 48-yard pass play over the middle but atoned in a big way with 9:09 left.
Pinned deep in their own end of the field, ISU’s offense again went nowhere midway through the fourth quarter and handed the Hawkeyes possession at midfield. Iowa needed just seven plays to march those 50 yards into the end zone, as Beathard capped it off with a 25-yard strike to VandeBerg. Iowa grabbed a 24-17 lead with 2:14 left to play.
Iowa’s kickoff sailed into the end zone and the Cyclones were faced with a 75-yard field to even the score. However, on the second play from scrimmage Sam Richardson threw a terrible pass to a covered receiver and Desmond King picked it off around the 25-yard line. The Hawkeyes took over with around 1:30 to play and tacked on another touchdown with Canzeri going into the end zone without much of a contest. Iowa led it 31-17 with just over one minute left to play.
Advantage: Iowa.
