First Quarter:
Iowa took possession to open up play and went three-and-out, and got a huge punt from Dillon Kidd to pin the Cyclones deep at their own 13-yard line.
Sam Richardson completed passes of seven yards to Tyler Brown and 11 to Jauan Wesley, before rushing for 12 yards on a 2nd-and-4 to get Iowa State headed in the right direction. However, Richardson was sacked for a nine-yard loss on 2nd-and-8, then Wendell Taiese whistled for a personal foul to end ISU’s hopes of scoring on its opening possession.
The Hawks’ second possession was much better than their first, as they got some huge carries in the run game from LeShun Daniels and Jordan Canzeri. Daniels carried three times for 31 yards, while Canzeri went twice for 11 more. However, Iowa quarterback CJ Beathard might have been a little overanxious throwing the ball as he tossed three straight incompletions to stall the drive out at the 31-yard line. Marshall Koehn came on to convert the 49-yard field goal and the Hawks led 3-0 with 5:44 left in the half.
A trio of Iowa defensive penalties – two off-sides and one pass interference – on the ensuing possession led to Cyclone first downs, as Mark Mangino’s group was able to march into the red zone. However, Richardson misfired on a pair of passes on 1st-and-10 and 3rd-and-5 as the offense would have to settle for a 37-yard field goal attempt from Cole Netten. ISU’s kicker split the uprights to tie the score at 3-3 with 2:07 left in the quarter.
Iowa State’s defensive front stopped Iowa’s next drive three-and-out as Demond Tucker sacked Beathard for a six-yard loss and Jay Jones came through for another sack on the next play for minus-10.
Advantage: Even.
