Third Quarter:
After its opponent gained a good bit of momentum with a late score heading into the locker room, the Cyclone offense seized back control of the game with a 13-play, 55-yard drive that led to another touchdown.
Kene Nwangwu started things off with a 47-yard kickoff return to give the offense excellent field position. As was the theme in the first half, ISU’s offense capitalized on third down with a pair of conversions. Joel Lanning connected with Carson Epps for eight yards on a 3rd-and-4. Then it was Lanning to Allen Lazard for 11 yards on 3rd-and-10. Five plays later, Mike Warren punched it in from four yards out and ISU opened up a 35-21 lead with 9:44 left in the quarter.
Baylor’s offense held serve on the ensuing possession, going 75 yards in just nine plays and using up 2:49 of clock. Seth Russell completed 3-of-3 passes for 26 yards, but it was a 21-yard carry by Shock Linwood on 3rd-and-4 that truly broke the Cyclones’ back on the possession. Russell’s five-yard scoring pass to Chris Platt capped off the drive and cut the score to 35-28 with 6:48 left in the quarter.
ISU continued the offensive onslaught with a quick-hitting drive of its own, taking just five plays to go 75 yards for a touchdown. Lanning hit Dondre Daley for 25 yards on 2nd-and-7 to get things moving in the right direction. Three plays later, the quarterback hit a wide-open Carson Epps over the middle for a 46-yard touchdown pass. The Cyclones opened back up a 14-point lead, 42-28, with 4:31 left in the quarter.
At long last, Iowa State’s defense came up with a big stop to get the offense back on the field late in the third. Baylor’s offense was stopped for one-yard losses on both 2nd-and-12 and 3rd-and-13 to bring out the punt team.
Advantage: Iowa State.
