Second Quarter:
With Baylor cutting the lead in half, the Cyclones answered in impressive fashion and did so methodically on the ground. On their third scoring drive of the game, I-State ran 11 plays and traveled 78 yards. Much of the damage was done by the tandem of Mike Warren and David Montgomery. Warren rushed seven times for 46 yards, while Montgomery added two for 14. It was Warren who capped it off with a nine-yard touchdown run that gave ISU a 21-7 lead with 11:40 left in the half.
The Bears answered in quick fashion, going 85 yards on just five plays and running only 1:12 of clock. Seth Russell’s 57-yard strike to Blake Lynch over the top of defensive back D’Andre Payne set the tone for the quick score. Baylor’s Shock Linwood later punched it in from two yards out and cut the Cyclones’ lead to 21-14 with 10:28 left in the quarter.
Just as the offense had done the entire half, it had another answer for the Bears’ latest touchdown. ISU marched 75 yards on 16 plays in a span of 7:40. Again Baylor got a steady dose of Warren and the running game. The sophomore carried seven times for 31 yards. This time it was Lanning who reached pay dirt when he kept on a quarterback draw for a two-yard touchdown. The Cyclones opened up a 28-14 lead with 2:48 left in the quarter.
The Bears had another quick answer thanks to a big play on first down when Linwood broke numerous tackles on his way to a 59-yard gain into the red zone. Later, on 3rd-and-goal from the three, Russell kept for the touchdown and cut ISU’s lead to 28-21 with 53 seconds left in the half.
Advantage: Iowa State.
