First Quarter:

Baylor’s offense took over to begin play and picked up one first down on a six-yard completion from Seth Russell to Ishmael Zamora on 3rd-and-5. But the defense would come up with a stop thanks in large part to senior cornerback Jomal Wiltz. Lined up on an island against a Baylor receiver, Wiltz provided tight coverage which led to a pair of incomplete passes. As a result, the Bears were forced to punt.

The Cyclones took over at their own 19-yard line and put together one of their most impressive drives of the season, spanning eight plays, 81 yards and 3:41 of clock. Mike Warren rushed three times for 15 yards, which was enough to set up the passing game with Joel Lanning.

The redshirt junior quarterback completed passes of six yards to Carson Epps on a 3rd-and-4 to get the drive moving. He would later hook up with Allen Lazard for what looked to be a 38-yard touchdown pass, but the play was negated by an illegal man downfield. Lanning went back to work on the next play, this time hitting DeShaunte Jones on a 43-yard catch and run for touchdown. On the drive, Lanning completed all four his passes for 67 yards. I-State opened up a 7-0 lead with 9:36 left in the quarter.

Baylor took advantage of two ISU penalties, including one of the personal foul variety, to get within field goal range on the ensuing possession. On a 4th-and-8 from the 30-yard line, once again the Cyclone defense rose to the occasion and stopped Baylor to force a turnover on downs.

I-State’s offense kept the momentum on its side. Lanning hit Lazard on the sideline with a 14-yard pass completion. A pair of penalties –illegal motion and holding – cost the Cyclones 15 yards and brought up a 2nd-and-22. Lanning continued his sharp play by hitting Trever Ryen for 44 yards and a first down. The quarterback and receiver connected again for nine yards on the next play and I-State moved inside the Baylor 10. Three plays later, Mike Warren punched it in from a yard out and the Cyclones led 14-0 with 3:06 left in the quarter.

Baylor’s offense finally got on track on its third possession of the game, going 75 yards on eight plays and needing just under two minutes to get on the board. Terence Williams was the workhorse on the drive, rushing four times for 28 yards, including the eight-yard touchdown. Russell completed one big pass on the drive, a 46-yarder to Chris Platt that ISU added 15 yards to in the form of an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. The Cyclones’ lead was trimmed to 14-7 with 1:12 left in the quarter.

Advantage: Iowa State.
