Iowa State's big unofficial visit weekend netted a few new commitments, including defensive end Deven Lamp who made his decision official a few days after returning from Ames. The Cyclones also made some inroads with one of Lamp's high school teammates, who spoke highly of his time in Iowa.
Cedar Hill Class of 2018 running back Joshua Fleeks enjoyed his time so much he's already talking about returning to I-State in the near future.
"Iowa State is my number one," said Fleeks. "For me to come up there and experience all of that other stuff, it made the experience that much greater. I had a great time and can't wait to come back. My dad and mom want to come up there and visit Iowa State with me soon. I'm planning to come back up there later this month."
And then there was the experience of riding along with Lamp to and from their unofficial visits.
"We were talking about our visits and how he wanted to commit," Fleeks said. "I had a great time going up there with him."
Fleeks said he liked all aspects of his trip to Ames.
"It was really fun and I liked it a lot," he said. "The campus and dorms were really nice. The coaches are great coaches and I really liked how they coached at the camp. Facility-wise, Iowa State is great."
The 6-foot-0, 167-pound Fleeks played mostly a reserve role in a deep stable of Cedar Hill rushers last season, rushing 30 times for 135 yards. But that hasn't kept college recruiters away from him - including the Cyclones' Jim Hofher - as Fleeks already has offers from ISU, Illinois, Houston and SMU.
Fleeks said he likes the similarities to the Cyclone's system and the one he competes in right now.
"The offense is a lot like the high school I'm already at, so it's perfect for me," Fleeks said. "I work very well out in open space and they'd like to use me at slot and running back. They'd like to have me out there catching the ball and be a threat running the ball."
