A Class of 2018 offensive lineman from inside the state’s borders has been a frequent visitor at Cyclone home games this fall.

Creston junior Trevor Downing has already collected an Iowa State offer and says he’s gotten a lot of attention from the head coach himself, Matt Campbell.

“They have been communicating with me a lot, probably three times a week,” said Downing. “I’ve also gotten a lot of mail. I was up there on campus for their home football games and got to talk to Coach Campbell. He came down three weeks ago on their bye week and I got to talk to him then. He said I’m one of his top priorities. He just wants to build a relationship and get me up there on campus as much as possible.”

The 6-foot-4, 270-pound Downing said he likes what the ISU offensive line has tried to do in its first season with Campbell at the helm.

“I feel like they’re trying to run the ball a lot more to balance that with the pass game,” Downing said. “That’s what we try to do at Creston and it’s what I do pretty well. I like run blocking more than pass blocking. Iowa State wants to run the ball a lot more than they have been.”

Since he’s been a frequent visitor to campus throughout the season, Downing has gained an appreciation for the Cyclone fan base that has shown up in droves.

“The atmosphere is great,” he said. “They’ve got a losing record and are still packing the house about every week. The fans are just dying for a winning program. I think the coaches are going to do it. They’re getting in a lot of good recruits. The coaches are great people. Every time I’ve been up there, I’ve talked to Coach Campbell himself before the game. It’s pretty special that the head coach takes time to talk to you before his game.”

The offensive lineman says he plans to visit for at least, if not two, of the Cyclones’ final home games of the season.

I-State remains Downing’s lone offer, thus making it his obvious favorite at this point. He doesn’t appear close to making any decision.

“I’m just keeping all doors open at this point,” Downing said. “Iowa State is my number one right now. Coach Campbell takes time to talk to his recruits when they’re up there and builds the relationships that are necessary.”

Downing said he’s hearing frequently from Iowa, Indiana, Penn State and Oklahoma.
