Iowa State intends to have a bigger presence in the state of Texas under Matt Campbell, and one of the Class of 2017 prospects the new head coach has spoken with and offered is a defensive end from Houston.

Langham Creek’s Dondrick Collins picked up his first offer of any kind from the Cyclones earlier this month when he spoke with Campbell.

“It was a couple weeks ago, we had just got out of practice and my coach told me that I received my first offer from Iowa State,” said Collins, who has also spoken with other assistant coaches since that time.

“The coaches said I’ve been working hard and need to keep up the good work. They like my size at 6-foot-5 and 242 (pounds), how I come off the ball, I had a really good first step, my length, how I’ll be able to stop the run and rush the quarterback.”

The junior defender said that the new ISU coach did a good job of selling the program to him.

“He made a very good impression on me,” Collins said. “He seems really cool and told me about the program, how nice it is and how he really wants me up there. I’m really excited about picking up my first offer from him. I’ve been working extremely hard to get where I am now, but I’ve got to keep working hard and continue to improve.”

The next step for the Langham Creek junior is to take an unofficial visit in the coming months.

“They told me they would try to get me in for a Junior Day during the summer to look at the campus,” Collins said. “I’m excited and am ready to check out Iowa State.”

Collins said he’s also being recruited by Baylor, Cincinnati, Michigan State, Houston and Texas A&M.

The Cyclones have also offered another Class of 2017 defensive end from Langham Creek, Chidi Ogbonnaya.
