Following a Florida defensive back’s official visit to Ames this weekend, it’s between the Cyclones and an in-state school for the prospect’s signature.
Tampa Sickles senior safety Jontrey Hunter returned home earlier today, saying the time he spent at Iowa State made a big impression.
“It was better than I expected,” said Hunter. “The players up there are real welcoming and so are the people in the town. It’s not just the school in general, but everywhere we went the people were welcoming. The coaches are real interactive with the players, so they gave me a better feel for how they are during the season and how the players are with the recruits. It’s very loving and caring up there.”
The 6-foot-1, 177-pound Hunter has been committed to South Florida for several months, but was open to hearing what the Cyclones’ staff had to say about his position and where he may potentially slot in.
“I had a meeting with Coach (Jon) Heacock and it went really well,” Hunter said. “We were talking about how I would fit. They play with three safeties on the field. We were going through film and breaking it down. He showed how I would fit in to different situations. He showed me the players I emulate and things I need to work on. I’m very hungry for a spot. It drives me to work harder.”
Freshman defensive back O.J. Tucker hosted Hunter over the weekend.
“He told me about getting adjusted to the cold up there, how the workouts are and the importance of staying on top of your studies,” Hunter said.
The visit wrapped up earlier today with Hunter meeting with head coach Matt Campbell. The senior leveled with the leader of the I-State program on where he is in the process.
“He talked to me about finding the perfect fit and where I would mainly fit in at,” the Florida prospect said. “It didn’t even have to be Iowa State. It’s about taking advantage of the opportunities that I have. As of right now, I’m still committed to USF but this really opened my eyes to what Iowa State has to offer me. We’ll see how it goes from here. I’ll take the pros with the cons and comparing both schools to see what’s best for me.”
Hunter’s official visit to USF will not be until January, so he figures to sign with his future school in February.
