After signing a pair of Jacksonville (Fla.) Raines twins in the Class of 2016, Iowa State is back at the high school hoping to sign a playmaking wide receiver next February.
Raines pass catcher Willie Wright picked up a Cyclone offer last Tuesday and said he’s already comfortable with the program, which isn’t much of a surprise since he played with signees JaQuan and Joshua Bailey last season. Wright said his cousin is another former Raines product, current Cyclone Nigel Tribune.
“Iowa State has a good program and I think it’s just missing a few pieces,” said the 5-foot-8, 155-pound Wright. “I think they can become an awesome team. I’m excited about the offer.
“I have two of my fellow teammates up there, so that’s a great connection. I already know people up there, so I’m real comfortable about Iowa State and won’t have to worry about anything.”
Wright stood out as a junior at Raines, doing damage catching passes and on special teams, racking up 1,061 all-purpose yards. He scored six touchdowns as a return man and caught five scoring passes.
After getting offers from FBS programs such as Memphis, Southern Miss, Temple and UCF, Wright said he was excited about the first Power-5 jumping into his recruitment.
“I heard from (Raines head coach Derin) Wiley that the linebacker coach at Iowa State had offered me,” Wright said. “Coach (Tyson) Veidt said he saw my film, liked me and said I’m on the right track. He said he liked my speed and ability to make plays with the ball. They want me to come up there and play slot receiver.”
