Iowa State attracts a record $424.9 million in external funding for fiscal year 2015. Meanwhile UI-sponsored research, total external funding up in FY 2015 to $438.5 million. The gap is narrowing. This was a big discussion on these boards a couple of years ago. SUI has traditionally held a funding advantage, but the gap has all but disappeared. These things don't always follow consistent trends with ups and downs in various categories, but if they did ISU would soon take the lead in yet another area, despite the state of Iowa government providing $16 million more funding to SUI ($46 million vs $30 million).
