After attending a summer camp last year and making a good impression on Iowa State coaches, a Kansas City defensive lineman in the 2020 class returned to Ames recently for an unofficial visit.
Park Hill sophomore James Gore, who just transferred from Staley High School, made his way to Ames with new teammate Johnny Wilson.
“I went up there (last) Wednesday over my spring break,” said Gore. “I got a pretty good vibe that they liked me. They also offered my friend Johnny Wilson, the defensive end at the school I just transferred to. I haven’t been offered yet, but I feel like something is going to be coming soon.
“I spoke with Coach (Eli) Rasheed and he said he wants to see me and Johnny work out this summer. He compared me to some of his linemen he has there right now and I’ve still got another growth spurt coming. I’ll be a little taller, but I’m looking alright (for being a sophomore).”
The 6-foot-1, 300-pound defensive tackle said he continues to be amazed by what’s in place at ISU, and said the future is bright.
“I got to see the campus, which is really beautiful,” he said. “I got to see the weight room. I learned about the new addition on the (north) side of the end zone, which will be double the size. They have some really nice facilities. I visited Mizzou a couple weeks back and that was good, but Iowa State’s was really nice. Especially the weight room. I love a good weight room. They are not a team to sleep on. They beat Oklahoma and TCU.”
Rasheed also made an impression on Gore, who said he could envision himself playing for the assistant one day.
“I got to sit in on one of the defensive line meetings and Coach Rasheed is a very good coach I’d love to be coached by,” Gore said. “His guys play with that fire in their eyes and I really like that. I’d like to be a part of that. Coach Rasheed is not always hard but is somebody who is going to push you when he feels you’re not all the way there. He’s somebody you can joke with when you do well.”
Gore said he looks forward to returning to I-State this summer for another camp, and also anticipates seeing Rasheed in Kansas City during the upcoming spring evaluation period.
