The biggest unofficial visit weekend perhaps in Iowa State football history got off to a nice start Friday afternoon when an Oklahoma rising senior tight end gave his commitment to head coach Matt Campbell.
Norman North Class of 2017 standout Charlie Kolar wrapped up an unofficial visit to Ames by sharing the news.
"It was my first time up there and I really just loved the experience," said Kolar, who also had offers from Air Force, Army and Stephen F. Austin, in addition to interest from California, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Tulsa.
"I had a good relationship and good communication with everyone there, whether it was the coaches or academic staff. The coaches were great guys and are having fun together. I'm excited to have a place to be. It was a big offer and I'm happy to be committing there. I'm excited to be a Cyclone."
The 6-foot-6, 227-pound Kolar said everything about the program appealed to him.
"The culture of the program is really turning around," he said. "They say 'the storm is brewing' and that's a really good phrase. It really encompasses how the program is changing with the new staff. I'm also really impressed with the fan base. Last year when they went 3-9, they still had fantastic fan support.
"The facilities - the indoor, weight room and locker room - are unbelievable. The stadium was also really cool in-person and I love that it's got real grass. I loved the design of the Sukup end zone addition.
Instead of waiting on potentially more offers to come his way in future months, Kolar said he decided to shut things down and said his verbal was happily accepted by the staff.
"I could tell they wanted me to commit and appreciated when I did, but it wasn't really any pressure," he said. "They were very excited and so was I."
During his visit, Kolar said he became even more sold on what the Cyclones are looking to achieve at the tight end position and how it will be used in the offensive system.
"Coach Campbell is probably going to use the tight end position like he did at Toledo," Kolar said. "They brought in three last year, including one from junior college, so I think they're trying to rebuild that spot. Hopefully I can be the man to help them out and do what I can to help out the program."
