Iowa State recently jumped on board in the recruitment of a Class of 2018 defensive tackle who also has offers from Iowa and Northern Illinois.
Oswego (Ill.) junior Noah Shannon said the visit came during an assistant coach’s stop at his high school during the recent contact period.
“I want to say (Coach Lou Ayeni) came in two days after Iowa, or maybe the week after I got the offer from Iowa,” said Shannon. “The Iowa State staff saw that Iowa offered me and Coach Ayeni went into depth about their rivalry with Iowa.
“Coach Ayeni also said they wanted to fill their class up with gritty Midwest kids and wanted to offer me. The defensive staff really likes my leverage getting off the line and my motor as a defensive player.”
In the days that followed his ISU offer, the 6-foot-2, 285-pound Shannon heard from many of the members of head coach Matt Campbell’s staff during a film session.
“A few days ago, a lot of their coaches contacted me and said they were watching my film right now as a complete defensive staff and they really loved me,” Shannon said. “They said I was their top priority at Iowa State and really showing some love.”
I-State first became aware of Shannon while working a satellite camp in his area over the summer, and that interest built throughout his junior season.
“I met some of their coaches over the summer at the North Central camp I attended,” Shannon said. “They said that they really liked me and that they’d be in contact with me and to keep a head’s up. I haven’t done that much on research on them, but know they’re an up and coming program with the new head coach they got.”
The Cyclones will now try to get up to speed on Shannon’s recruitment, as he’s been on other campuses like Iowa’s and Wisconsin’s this fall for unofficial visits. The big man said he’s planning to be in Ames in the coming months.
“They wanted me to come out for a basketball game and check it out during that time,” Shannon said. “They gave me like five basketball games to choose from. I need to talk to my family about it to see if a certain date works for both of my parents. I plan on going down there.”
