A weekend visit to Iowa State with several teammates was an eye-opening experience for a Michigan high school defender with a pair of Power-5 offers.
Cass Tech junior outside linebacker Zach Morton traveled to Ames last weekend with 10 other teammates and said he enjoyed the facilities aspect of his trip.
“We started off by going into the stadium and touring it,” said Morton, who also has offers from Syracuse, Bowling Green and Cincinnati. “We came in through the Sukup End Zone (Club) and it was pretty nice over there. Then we went back over to the football offices and met with Coach Campbell, then toured the facilities at the football complex. We finished up the day by touring the dorms.
“I didn’t know everything would be so nice at Iowa State. They were definitely top of the line facilities. It changed my perception of the program. I liked that everything is family oriented and a very welcoming place.”
Morton was part of a traveling group that included other Cass Tech prospects Donovan Johnson, Willie Reid, Desean Boyd, Kalon Gervin, Jordan Lewis, Aaron Jackson, Donovan Williams, DeAndre Square and Otis Doss.
“I’m pretty sure everyone liked it as much as I did,” Morton said. “It’s a very nice, welcoming place.”
The 6-foot-4, 225-pound Morton is apparently being targeted for a role in the Cyclones’ front four.
“Coach (Matt) Campbell sat me down one-on-one and we talked about how spring ball and conditioning are going,” Morton said.
“He said I would be able to make a difference in their program and they’re excited about me. He said I’m high on their 2017 list. He asked if I saw the combine and said there were 36 linemen there and 20 of them were from the Big 12. He said I’d be able to showcase my skills as a lineman.”
Although Morton said he’s nowhere near a decision date, the Cyclones are high on his list and will be in the running when commitment time comes.
“If I had a top five, Iowa State would definitely be in there,” Morton said. “Right now I’m still feeling out schools, but I really liked what I saw at Iowa State. Coach Campbell wants me to come back down with my family, so he can build a relationship with them.”
