After having been on the Iowa State coaching staff’s radar when it was at Toledo last year, a Class of 2017 running back from the state of Michigan recently picked up an offer from the Cyclones.
West Bloomfield junior Davion Johnson said he received an offer from I-State in late February after a short conversation with assistant coach D.K. McDonald.
“I talked to Coach McDonald a little bit with my teammate (Chris Kalaj),” said Johnson. “Then I heard later in the day that I had an offer. The Iowa State coaches were pretty much all at Toledo, so I talked to them last year.”
The 6-foot-0, 195-pound Johnson said he believes he’d be a good fit for what the Cyclone offense will become this fall under new head coach Matt Campbell.
“Coach McDonald said I still have a lot of speed, quickness and explosiveness with the ball,” Johnson said. “He still likes me a lot so he offered me. He said I fit with what they want out of a running back, in that they can pass me the ball and get me out in the open field so I can work out there. They said I’m the perfect match for the offense.”
ISU became the first Power-5 school to offer Johnson, who also has FBS offers from Toledo, Western Michigan, Central Michigan, Miami (Ohio) and Ball State.
Johnson said he’s impressed with what he’s seen of the Cyclones thus far, and wants to take an unofficial visit in the coming months.
“I haven’t done that much research yet, but what I’ve seen I’ve liked a lot,” he said. “I like the campus and how all their games are packed in and crazy. I like the whole atmosphere of game days at Iowa State. I’m going to talk to them to see if I can come out in the spring or summer. The Iowa State offer is at the top for me right now. I like them a lot.”
