With the current situation at running back, Iowa State can afford to be picky with the one prospect it brings in for the Class of 2018. One of those candidates getting consideration continues to be a three-star senior from the state of California.

Lompoc standout Toa Taua, who is actually a three-star linebacker by Rivals, is being considered on the offensive side by the Cyclones.

“Things are going great,” said Taua, who was offered by the Cyclones last December. “The connection with Iowa State is pretty good. They’re recruiting me to play running back.

“I’ve talked to Coach Lou (Ayeni) and he really likes the way I play and I’m high on their board right now. He said I’d be a good fit for their program and the way they run the offense. He likes how I run so physical and can make people miss, which sets me up for a lot of yards after contact.”

The 5-foot-10, 195-pound Taua said he’s taken notice of the direction ISU has gone in head coach Matt Campbell’s second season.

“I think they’re an up and coming program,” he said. “They have a lot of young guys. I like the staff. Everything seems pretty legit up there. They just got the big win against Oklahoma and it was pretty exciting to watch that. It’s pretty promising and shows me they’re that team coming up. They’re very underrated. They have a lot going on.”

In addition to the one he has from I-State, Taua has offers from Arizona State, California, Colorado and Washington State. He’s also high on a few G5 offer schools like San Diego State and Nevada.

The running back says the Cyclones have moved up on his list of late, saying they’re in his list of favorites.

“The Iowa State offer is definitely in the top-five for me, along with San Diego State, Washington State, Nevada and Colorado,” Taua said. “I’m very interested in Iowa State and all that they’ve got going on. I’ve been looking at a lot of stuff online, like how big their stadium is and how loud it gets.”

Taua has yet to schedule any official visits, but says likely destinations include ISU, San Diego State, Colorado and Arizona State.
