Evrett Edwards has proven himself academically. Now, he’d like the opportunity to prove himself on the football field as well.

The 5-foot-11, 190-pound safety will have blazed through an undergraduate degree at Duke in 3 ½ years when he graduates from there this spring. Edwards has decided to transfer and enroll in graduate school at another institution and he’ll bring two years of college football eligibility with him.

Edwards has played sparingly at Duke and that is his primary motivation for moving on. He appeared in all 13 of the Blue Devils’ games last year, recording six tackles in light duty that included special teams. He made 20 tackles in 12 games as a redshirt freshman in 2014, including seven against Pitt and four in a game with Kansas.

Edwards thinks he can do more.

“I am looking for an opportunity to prove myself as a good football player,” Edwards said. “I belong on the field. That was not the case at Duke.”

Edwards is from Woodbridge, Virginia – the same hometown as Iowa State legend Dexter Green. But his interest in ISU and an unofficial visit to Ames last weekend came by way of what members of the Cyclone coaching staff had done in Ohio.

“Coach Heacock had recruited a bunch of kids from my high school when he was (the head coach) at Youngstown State,” Edwards explained. “And I had seen Coach Campbell’s record with transfers at Toledo. So we got in touch with Coach Heacock and Coach Campbell and they wanted me to come up and check it out.”

Edwards had a predictably positive visit to Iowa State, including watching the spring game on Saturday. He’ll take additional visits and has the stage set for a decision within the next couple of weeks.

“I plan to have my mind made up the first week of May,” said Edwards. “But I do have a few more visits before then. I am going to Utah State this weekend and then next weekend I will go to the University of Maryland. I have visited Troy and I popped in quick at Maryland one time before, too.”

All of the schools Edwards is visiting have offered him a scholarship that would go in effect immediately for the 2016 and 2017 seasons.

“I wouldn’t be going out there to a school if I didn’t have an offer,” Edwards said. “I am treating this process like a business and I am not going to waste anybody’s time.”
