I've come to realize something I already knew. And that is that I spend too much on beer at Iowa State games. My story follows.

A couple of years ago after having some issues with fraudulent charges to my credit card, I started scanning receipts into my computer and became a little more diligent in monitoring my credit card charges. It fit inline with my workflow in that I scan basically everything and throw away the paper.

I had the receipt scanning mostly automated such that all I had to do was put the receipt in the scanner, push the scan button, wait for a dialog box to pop up, then name the file and hit enter. The scan profile already put it in the right folder and started the file naming with a date code. All I added to the filename was the amount of the charge and name of the business. It wasn't hard, but the file naming did take a little effort.

After doing this for about a year and a half, I discovered that there was a receipt scanning program that came with a portable scanner I bought for the condo last year. This was a portable version of my desktop scanner at home. They both used the same scanning software but the receipt scanning software was something new. It was even more automated, eliminating the file naming. It extracts the data from the receipt and stores it in it's database along with an image of the receipt. Having the database is a lot more capable than what I was doing with just the images. So I drug all my old receipts into the new program and deleted the old receipt files.

So now I have two years of receipt data stored away. I had quite a few receipts from Levy which came from concessions, mostly Iowa State. It also included all my spending at Johnny's for MBB, WBB and wrestling as well as my bar bill at the Jack Trice Club. It was a simple task to see how much I spent with Levy last school year. I knew it would be a big number. I go to basically everything. But I was a bit surprised it was nearly $1500, most of it beer. That's quite a few cases of beer.
