I drove over to Ames today and was pleased to see a good section of the road through the Tama mountains paved. There is still a long way to go, but it's happening. They paved a few miles of the westbound lane and have started to put rebar down on the eastbound lane, also at the west end.
They also had put gravel base down on the eastbound lane. In prior discussions that lane seem to be lagging and we anticipated they would open the westbound lane first for two way traffic, then use recycle the old road for the base on the eastbound lane. They may still happen for portions of the road, but it's looking less like that is the plan.
Since the appear to be paving both lanes at the west end, I wonder if they are planning on open a portion of the highway for four lane traffic before they finish the east end.
The work in Benton county must be getting close to finished. They don't have signs up but it looks like most of the road work is done.
