So I've been coming up to 'Boji for 25 years or so. As you boat around the lake that many people have flags at the end of their docks. Old Glory was and is the far and away leader in flag displays.
But just from my observation in recent years that ISU flags are coming closer to matching EIU flags in display on West Okoboji docks. So took a tour of the circumference of West Okoboji this morning with Mrs Herdcyclones and Miss Herdcyclones to do some flag counting. "House divided" flags got 1 point to each team.
Final Score
Iowa 41
Iowa State 31
Now my thoughts on flags, and why I was thinking more ISU flags, upon close inspection to count, I got "Psych!" called more because of our colors. Saw a couple USC flags (really), and then a couple KC Chiefs, and Nebraska and U of South Dakota are red also. The only other black and gold I saw was a Colorado flag. But as I mentioned above, I really do think ISU is getting closer to those other guys versus say what I saw up here 20 years ago. I'm well aware probably the 50 and above crowd, especially in NW Iowa, is a huge Hawk lean, based on their success in the early 80s. But as they all die off, I think it is tilting to ISU.
Of course my survey is just a point in time, I'm sure the numbers change as people come and go.
Then, and I didn't officially count, but ya wanna take a guess what school came in #3 based on my observations?????Creighton. Which makes me laugh. I do realize a lot of people come up from Omaha to Boji, and I realize there are a lot of high income people from Creighton. But I bet a saw 10 of them. Nebraska was right there with them, probably right around 10. Husker flags are the team that I feel has really shrunk. Used to see a lot of them previously.
Others I recall seeing not mentioned above off the top of my head, Florida, FSU, Wyoming, Northwestern(IA), UNI, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Drake, Michigan, Alabama, TCU, South Dakota State. For pro teams, the Vikings were the clear leader, with a smattering of Cubs. Saw a Phoenix Suns (really ?), Miami Dolphins. Something I just realized I didn't see..Nascar flags. I didn't see a Marshall Thundering Herd flag either. I need to get on that. That Kelly Green really stands out!
