Iowa State’s recruitment of Georgia high school quarterback Zeb Noland in this year’s class may help the coaching staff in its pursuit of a 2017 offensive lineman with several Power-5 offers under his belt.
Offensive tackle Caleb Chandler’s Jefferson High School team took on Noland and Oconee County the past two years, but now the quarterback is trying to get the junior big man to join him in Ames.
“I’ve talked to Zeb Noland,” said Chandler. “We went up against him the past few years. The coaches told me that he loves the place up there and that I should talk to him more about it, so we made contact a few times and he’s told me the same things – that it’s beautiful, the coaching staff up there is amazing and that it would be a good place for me to come and play football.”
I-State coaches hope the testimonial will be enough to get the 6-foot-5, 295-pound Chandler on campus, and eventually in the fold for next February.
Louisville, Maryland, Minnesota, Mississippi State and Missouri have also made offers to the big man.
“Everything is going great between me and Iowa State,” Chandler said. “I talk to a coach about every day. They’ve told me the campus up there is beautiful, the people up there are unbelievable and that I’d love it up there. They need guys like me on the offensive line to be a big part of the team’s success in the next couple years.
They’re really trying to get me to come up there, but with baseball and the ACT coming up I’ve been really busy. I might be able to come up there on the 16th (of April.) Either way, I’ll be taking a visit to Iowa State this spring or summer.”
Offensive coordinator and line coach Tom Manning has spearheaded the recruitment of Chandler, with others stepping in to help on occasion.
“The coaches and some of the players are making me feel welcome and showing I could be a key component to their team,” Chandler said. “I couldn’t ask for anything more than that.”
