Finally got to watch the SJSU game on TV after seeing it in person on Saturday. Here are some thoughts:
- Crowd was sparse, but expected. You take away tailgating from many of the fans and that will hurt attendance. Also, the team's performance in the first few games didn't exactly inspire people to buy tickets.
- Uniforms looked better on TV than they did in person. I thought they were great regardless, but it WAS a little difficult to see the numbers from the stands. On TV, they looked really good...which is more important anyway. Finally, we're joining the 2010's.
- Still don't like the Thunderstruck intro. No idea why it's so quiet. Actually, the ACDC song they play after that is better.
- QB: I love the QB rotation. Park clearly has the more accurate arm, although Lanning can be deadly on those deep throws. I figured that they would let Lanning run more, but he didn't really need to Saturday. I would hope that they eventually get a little more specialized packages...running more zone read with Lanning and more short passing with Park...but then you can't be too predictable. One thing I like about the rotation is that in past years, we've had QBs take too many hits and get a little gunshy. Now, they automatically take half the hits, which will help down the line. I do think that Park is our starter next year.
-RB: Warren did OK. He ran hard although he needs to get those fumbles under control. Starting to get on track.
-WR: Really nice game for this group. We really do have some weapons if the OL protects. Daley didn't drop any and Jones is starting to show up. I like this group.
-TE: Chandler is just OK. For a big guy, he's not a great blocker. He seems to have trouble locating someone to block. Hands are good, but he's slow. Harms doesn't show up much. It would be nice to see Fernandez make an appearance.
-OL: Nice game from these guys. I think that they're settling in. Seda really gets after it and gets downfield. Run blocking is still not great, but they're getting better.
-DL: Seemed like Tucker ran himself out of the hole a lot. He was better at NG in a 3-4 where he could just tee off and disrupt. In this D, I think that he needs to hold his blocker a little longer and then react. Didn't see much from Trent or Aka. Johnson had a few nice plays. It would be nice to see Leath in there getting some snaps.
-DE: Thomas has put together a couple of really nice games. He had a direct impact on a lot of those picks. Bailey is going to be a beast. Best HS DE we've signed in years. Waggoner battles and makes for a really solid rotation player. Haven't heard much from Meyer and I don't think I've heard Luna's name all year long.
-LB: Seeley misses more tackles than he makes and seems to run himself out of plays a lot. He does OK blitzing. Not sure where the Willie Harvey hype came from, but he's done very little this year. Mills I thought had a decent game and probably should be starting. Northrup made a few plays.
-CB: I thought that Wiltz and Peavy had great games. Helps when the QB isn't very good. Tribune played well too. Jones turned around and made plays on the ball where he didn't in the past. These guys will be tested a lot more down the line, but they had a great game Saturday.
-S: KCM had a really good game. He's really good in run support when he's flying around. Johnson just doesn't show up much. Payne was all over the field too.
-K/P: Just about a perfect game from these guys. Netten hit all his kicks, Francis was bombing into the EZ all day and Downing did well.
