While hosting an Illinois wide receiver on a game day visit last Saturday, Iowa State joined Michigan as the two Power-5 offers for a 2021 prospect whose recruitment is building momentum.
LaGrange Park Nazareth Academy junior Landon Morris said he decided to visit Ames after the Cyclones staff had started recruiting him hard in recent months. That decision turned out to be a fruitful one when he was called into a meeting with head coach Matt Campbell.
“I had been getting a lot of game invites from them in the mail, so my dad and I decided to go to an Iowa State game,” said Morris. “We left around 3 a.m. and got there in time for the game. It’s a beautiful campus and I love the stadium. I met Coach (Nate) Scheelhaase and Coach (Josh) Rosenthal, as well as some other coaches, and they’re all great guys.
“After the game, they took me and my pops to the weight room. They showed me the weight room and facilities. They took me up and sat me down in the wide receivers room. Coach Campbell came in and offered me a scholarship. He said they’d been watching me for a little while and want me to play the X position. He likes my physicality, hard work and everything I’ve been doing at Nazareth. He thinks I’d be a great fit at Iowa State.”
Morris said his versatility on the offensive side is something college programs have been drawn to.
“I could play tight end, wide receiver or slot – I think I’m versatile in any offense,” he said. “I think that helps coaches decide where they can use me. It’s pretty easy for them to decide. At Nazareth, I’m playing the X but can switch it up and go anywhere.”
The 6-foot-6, 205-pound Morris now has offers from ISU and Michigan to go along with interest from Cincinnati, Iowa, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Purdue and Wisconsin. He has game day visits scheduled to Wisconsin, Iowa and Notre Dame.
Morris said his game day visit to ISU gave him a favorable first impression of the program and everything around it.
“I’ve never been to the state of Iowa before and this was my first time,” he said. “We drove around the university and campus. It was really amazing. The stadium was great with all the fans. The coaches are one of a kind. I really think Iowa State is special. I really like it there.”
Of course, watching a Cyclone team post 72 points in a blowout victory certainly helped matters too.
“There were a ton of passing yards,” Morris said. “A lot of wide receivers got involved, which was also very good. I think they played like a team, which was also great to see.”
With a game day visit to Ames under his belt, Morris said he’s looking forward to returning for a bowl practice or Junior Day this winter.
