A summer offer from the Cyclones helped spur a Minnesota high school tight end’s visit to Ames to watch the football program beat Northern Iowa in three overtimes.
Delano junior Trey Longstreet said he particularly enjoyed experiencing Jack Trice Stadium for the first time, as well as seeing the program’s facilities up close and personal.
“We got to the practice facility and checked out the weight room and locker room,” said Longstreet. “We went on the field for warmups and watched the game. We golf carted around campus for a little while and talked to the coaches.
“I really enjoyed the atmosphere at the game with all the fans. It was crazy. It was a fun game. I know it was three overtimes and they came out with a narrow win, but the atmosphere was just fantastic throughout. I also enjoyed seeing the facilities. The weight room is next-level and crazy compared to what we have here and at some other colleges. The campus is beautiful and the people were all very nice.”
The 6-foot-6, 190-pound Longstreet plays a position that was a focal point of the passing game against the Panthers, but the long and lanky 2021 prospect also saw what gains needed to be made personally to play on Saturdays.
“I talked with Coach (Alex) Golesh, Coach (Colby) Kratch and Coach (Josh) Rosenthal and they were all pretty good conversations,” Longstreet said. “We talked about everything and what I need to do. Coach Golesh talked to me about the size of the tight ends and how I still need to get bigger if I want to play that position. There are some big dudes out there.”
As Longstreet reflects back on his first experience at I-State, he said it backed up everything he had heard from others.
“I talked with people about it and they’ve said how beautiful it was,” he said. “That’s exactly what I saw. It was great. The coaches are also really nice people. We talked about me possibly coming back down for another game and one of the coaches coming up to watch me play a game this season.”
