Went in to have my lug nuts re-tightened after a rotation and was visiting with the owner, who is a former student of mine. He had sons that played football for Nebraska and UNI and remains particularly knowledgeable about UNI. He is not a Hawk or a Cyclone but genuinely wants both to do well. We got to talking about his boys and he mentioned that neither had been given the time of day by Iowa State. The older one, who went to Nebraska, was during Mac's time and the younger one was either Chizik or Rhoads. He mentioned a couple of UNI linemen who wanted to go to ISU, but were not given, in his words, the time of day by the Iowa State staff.
We also talked about 2 current Algona linemen. One was offered by Iowa and had, in his words, zero interest from ISU. He is a big kid, about 6-5 and 265 with good feet. The other is the son of a former ISU starting center (2 years) who is probably more of a project, but not much more. He is 6-4 and 245, wrestles and is a 51+ shot putter. He also has had only limited, if any, contact from us, but he is as big and more athletic than his dad was as a senior in high school. It seems that since Mac we have been weak in our Iowa presence. I don't know if it is effort, evaluation or they just truly don't think Iowa recruiting is important. And maybe it isn't. But I do know the only period in my lifetime that we were the dominant team in Iowa, we dominated Iowa recruiting.
