The words “freak show” have come up when an Iowa State assistant coach describes a running back recruit from the state of Louisiana, according to the three-star prospect in the Class of 2017.

West Monroe junior Trey Coleman has been recruited heavily by the Cyclones and especially position coach Lou Ayeni, who was on campus last week during spring evaluations.

“The recruiting process is going good,” said Coleman. “I have talked to Coach Lou (Ayeni) lately and he likes me a lot. He told me he wants me to be the Big 12 Freshman of the Year. He likes me a lot and we have a good relationship.

“He came down last week and after that we talked a little bit. I told him I was thankful for him coming down to see me. He’s real cool and we talk about anything. He says I’m a star and a freak show that he thinks can come in and play as a freshman. He likes that I have a good work ethic. When I have the ball in my hand, I know what to do with it. He says I’m just a ball player, basically.”

I-State is pulling out all the stops in order to distinguish itself with the 6-foot-1, 201-pound running back, who also has Power-5 offers from the likes of Arkansas, Mississippi State and Tennessee.

“I think he’s helping set Iowa State apart by talking to me a lot and building a relationship with me,” Coleman said. “He’s been cool with me. A lot of people just offer you and they’re done, but he’s talking to me daily and weekly. He can’t wait to get me up there and I can’t wait to go. I’m going to try to make it up there soon with my dad.”

Coleman said he’s only seen pictures of the facilities and ISU campus, but is encouraged by everything he’s heard from his recruiting coach.

“Coach Ayeni has showed me some pictures of the facility and it looks nice,” Coleman said. “I don’t know much about the program right now, but I like the coaches and facilities I’ve seen. Coach Lou has told me it’s a great place and I like their running backs.”

A decision appears to be on the horizon for Coleman, who says he would like to make one following his unofficial visit to Ames.

“I don’t really know when I’m going to make a decision, but if I do it’s probably going to be after spring or during the summer,” he said. “I’m still trying to figure out who my top school is. I still haven’t been to Iowa State. I went to Arkansas and Mississippi State recently and those schools have offered. But I want to experience Iowa State and see if I feel at home before I make a decision.”
