Every time I hear an ISU coach talk about how they have reached heights never before achieved in ISU football based upon the number of bowl games they coached, I feel like I am listening to a politician twisting reality.
Today there are 40 bowl games, so 80 teams or 62% of FBS teams go to a bowl.
Up from-
15 in 1980
19 in 1990
25 in 2000
35 in 2010
For a coach to compare his performance and success compared to any of his predecessors based upon bowl game participation during the last 35 years is a complete joke and a misleading stat to boast about.
Today, it's almost like passing minimum competency exam to be able to get a job in an industry. If you outperform 37% of your peers, you are a success.
If basketball had the same "reward" system, they would need to create a tournament for another 102 teams in addition to the NCAA, NIT and CBI to get to the 62% participation rate.
Anyway, just my thoughts after realizing that there 40 bowl games.
