A three-star defensive back with multiple Power-5 offers took his first official visit of the recruiting process over the weekend to Iowa State, saying the experience has put the program in solid position for a commitment.
West Palm Beach (Fla.) Oxbridge Academy senior V’Lique Carter made the trip to Ames and was hosted by a Cyclone freshman he’s known since their respective childhoods.
“My weekend was fantastic,” said Carter, who also has P5 offers from the likes of Kentucky, Oklahoma and Purdue. “I wasn’t expecting a whole lot of it. It surprised me and I was pretty shocked. I enjoyed myself up there. It was cold because it was raining up there. But it was still overall a great game. Iowa State’s defense didn’t let the offense score. They just went out there and competed.
“I was hosted by Speedy (Datrone Young). We played little league together and we’re from the same city. We had a good time with each other and enjoyed each other’s company. He showed me around a lot. He told me about the process and how that goes. Iowa State is now in my top-two along with Colorado State.”
The 5-foot-10, 165-pound Carter said he particularly enjoyed catching up with assistant coach D.K. McDonald to get the plan on how he’d be used in the Cyclones’ defense.
“I sat one-on-one with Coach McDonald and he was talking about me starting out playing corner and transitioning to free safety,” Carter said. “He wants me to play up there and ball out. He put up some game film and was comparing me to other good players and saying I could make similar big plays if I come up there. Their defense is really similar to ours. I saw some of the coverages and recognized them from my high school. That’s a good start.”
As is the custom, head coach Matt Campbell hosted Carter on Sunday morning for breakfast.
“He told me about trusting his process,” Carter saids. “He just came in a year and a half ago. They have a process that’s going on and it’s going well. I liked what he said to me. I liked what I saw of him. He brought a few things in and made it more home for me.”
Carter said he’s approaching commitment time, but would likely wait until after he travels to his other finalist.
“I don’t have any other visits scheduled right now,” he said. “I’m trying to schedule my Colorado State visit. UCF and Georgia State are also trying to get in the running. I’m probably going to commit later this season or whenever the season is over. It’s a process for me.
