Iowa State is set to host a Florida prep wide receiver during the final weekend of its recruiting for the Class of 2016.
Lakeland’s Tariq Young, who had been recruited by the new ISU coaching staff while it was at Toledo, said he was contacted last month shortly after Matt Campbell took over as the new head man in Ames.
“Coach Gasser from Iowa State direct-messaged me and said I had some impressive film,” said Young, who is scheduled to visit the weekend of January 29th. “They are looking for a slot receiver, looked into me and were impressed with what they saw.
“I’ve built a relationship with the coaches, especially because Toledo had been recruiting me. I know all of the coaches that came from Toledo and they’ve been on me ever since they got to Iowa State. They’ve been showing me a lot of love and I really like Iowa State.”
The 5-foot-11, 180-pound receiver said he also likes the competition he would play as a member of the Cyclones.
“I’ve been looking into the program and like it,” Young said. “I like that they’re in the Big 12 and feel like I can fit right in. I could see myself playing there. I like Iowa State and have been checking out the school. I like the type of offense they’re going to run. They had a down year, but every team has a down year.”
When he arrives in Ames, Young will be looking at a couple aspects of I-State.
“I want to see where I can fit in and if it’s a place I could envision myself being at,” he said.
At one point, Young also had a Power-5 offer from Wisconsin but it appears the staff in Madison has moved on. He also has offers from Alcorn State, Bowling Green, Colorado State, Liberty, UMass, Middle Tennessee State, North Dakota State and Western Kentucky.
“In addition to Iowa State, I’m also pretty high on Western Kentucky and Colorado State,” Young said. “I’m not so high on Wisconsin anymore and some of the other programs. I haven’t scheduled any official visits other than Iowa State, and will probably schedule trips to Western Kentucky and Colorado State for the other two weekends this month.”
As a receiver this past season, Young caught 35 passes for 637 yards and six touchdowns. He also returned 12 punts for 148 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
