Several Power-5 programs have stepped up with offers to a Florida prep defender, but the junior recruit recently narrowed his focus to a dozen schools with a social media posting. One of those programs listed was Iowa State.
Sanford Seminole Class of 2017 strong-side defensive end DeMarco Artis said it’s the extra attention he’s received from the Cyclones that has kept them in the running.
“All of the teams are in the mix, but those are the schools that I’m leaning towards,” said Artis, who ISU is recruiting to play the LEO position on defense. “I’m not saying anybody is out of it, but the schools that I released are definitely the ones I’m leaning to. As for Iowa State, the staff and the head coach have shown me a lot of love. It’s all the time that they’re saying they want me there.”
Also included on Artis’ list of a dozen were Ole Miss, Virginia Tech, Maryland, Pittsburgh, NC State, UCF, Temple, Michigan State, Indiana, North Carolina and Louisville.
The Cyclones dispatched two assistant coaches – Eli Rasheed and Bryan Gasser – to Seminole High School during spring evaluations. The 6-foot-3, 218-pound Artis said the message from the staff has been pretty clear.
“I saw those guys a few times over the spring and they really believe in me,” Artis said. “All of the Iowa State coaches have said I’d be a great value to the team. They’ve told me they see me playing at Iowa State, being a leader and taking control out there. That sounds good to me, because I’m all about being a leader. It wouldn’t be anything new to me, but for a group of coaches to see that in me too that makes a big difference.”
The latest opportunity for I-State coaches to put their eyes on Artis was Sunday’s Sound Mind Sound Body camp in Tampa. Gasser, Tyson Veidt, Lou Ayeni, John Kuceyeski and Mark Thurston were the staff members on hand for the SMSB event.
The next step in the process is for the Cyclones to get the heralded three-star junior on campus.
“They have talked to me about taking an unofficial visit up there and I’m going to try to get up there when I can,” Artis said.
