A few days ago we had a discussion of excess deaths during the pandemic but the data ended at the end of May in the linked report. I just happened to stumble on the same kind of data on the CDC website, but it is more up-to-date. A graph is shown near the bottom of the page linked below. The graph allows you to filter by state or look at the entire nation.
Excess Deaths Associated with COVID-19
Nationally, excess deaths peaked at 36.4% to 41.3% for the week ending April 11, 2020. Looking at the Iowa data, excess deaths are much lower, peaking at 11.0% to 21.6% for the week ending May 9, 2020. The data for New York City confirms how hard that state was hit. Excess deaths peaked at 607.9% to 661.6% for week ending April 11, 2020. Yikes! Clearly that has influenced the national data. Spot checking some other states leads me to believe we have been relatively lucky here in Iowa so far, although we are seeing the numbers spike up as of late.
There are a lot of options on that page that can consume a person for hours. I have just scratched the surface.
