I happened to come across a couple of Hawkeye fans that I know pretty well. Good friendly people, otherwise classic Tavern Hawks.
I sarcastically slapped one the shoulder and asked him how many points will he give me. He responded with 24 points. I burst out laughing thinking he was joking and playing along, and then saw that he appeared serious.
I paused and asked. "Are you effing serous?" and he deadpan responded "Yeah". I asked how much, and he said five bucks. I tried for $5000 but no deal.
The other guy said he didn't think it will be THAT bad, so I asked him how many points would HE give me. He offered 17 points.
I told both of them "You do realize that Iowa State is slightly favored right?" They both just shrugged their shoulders and thought that Iowa was going to dominate.
I said, so you think that Iowa State is as bad as Miami of Ohio and Rutgers, and the one said that he don't think we were THAT bad. But you think Iowa can beat Iowa State AS BAD? He shrugged his shoulders and said he just felt that Iowa was going to dominate the game.
I then said that you realize that many are saying that Iowa State has the best defense in the Big-12, and perhaps the best defense ever. They both shrugged and said that they just think that Iowa has momentum going.
I asked "Momentum from beating Miami and Rutgers?" Deadpan response: Well, yeah.
Still trying to find some logic, I finally asked: "So based on that, you must think the UNI game is in indicator of how Iowa State is going to play against Iowa?" And he said, well no not necessarily. I just think Iowa is going to win big.
They were both serious! This wasn't trash talk. There was no trash talk. It was what they firmly believe, and could not comprehend any other scenario.
That folks....is what it is like living among Tavern Hawks and their mentality in eastern Iowa! I sheet you not!
