Iowa State has made it abundantly clear to a Kansas City-area defensive end that he’s one of their biggest targets in the Class of 2017, and that was on full display as the Class of 2017 standout took a trip to Ames last weekend for the spring game.
Overland Park (Kan.) St. Thomas Aquinas’ Angel Dominguez said he particularly enjoyed hearing about the program from former Cyclones who were also on hand for the game.
“It was awesome,” said Dominguez, a three-star recruit that currently has Power-5 offers from ISU, Oklahoma State and Kansas. “When we first got there, we went out to the Sukup End Zone Club and they had all the alumni back. They talked about Iowa State and what their tradition and culture was. I liked how passionate they were.
“After that we split up and checked out all of the dorms. They were really nice. (Carson Epps) showed me around. We just sat around and talked a long time. He answered every single question I had about Iowa State and what college life is like there.”
The 6-foot-3, 250-pound junior said he liked the way Campbell and his staff showcased the program to him.
“All of the recruits and football players made it feel like I’m at home with all my family,” Dominguez said. “That’s what type of atmosphere it was. Coach Campbell wanted everyone to feel like they’re at home. I really like Coach Campbell and the coaches he’s brought in.”
Although the Cardinal/Gold scrimmage could have seemed secondary compared to all of the other day’s events, Dominguez said that wasn’t the case.
“The spring game atmosphere was great, especially seeing 15,000 fans come there to watch the spring game,” he said. “The game was hype, getting to see those players go at it a little bit.”
Near the end of the visit, Campbell reiterated to Dominguez just how important he is for I-State’s 2017 class.
“My dad, little brother and I met with Coach Campbell,” Dominguez said. “He told me they want me a lot. They can’t do anything more to show me how important I am to their recruiting. I fit perfectly into the defense and he wants me to help lead the defense in this Class of 2017.”
The Cyclones may have to wait a while longer to find out where they’ll finish with Dominguez, who doesn’t appear close to making a decision anytime in the near future.
“I’m just enjoying right now,” he said. “I’ve still got a whole other season of football left. I promised my dad I wouldn’t commit until the end of my senior season. I’m just loving the process right now.”
According to Dominguez, ISU coaches will be on campus over the next few days for spring evaluations and to look at his transcripts.
