A recently offered linebacker from a prolific high school program in Michigan is working on an unofficial visit to Iowa State in the coming months.
Detroit Cass Tech’s Dyontae Johnson said he picked up his offer from the Cyclones last month and said coaches are high on the versatility he brings to his position.
“A couple weeks ago they came out to my school and I met the linebackers coach, Tyson Veidt, and he was really impressed with my size and how I looked physically,” said Johnson. “I also got to meet (D.K.) McDonald. From there, we just stayed in contact and they called my coach one night and said I had an offer.
“They like my physicality, especially how physical I am at the point of attack. They like my athleticism as a whole, speed and ability to get from point A to point B in a certain amount of time to make a play. Iowa State is showing a lot of interest in me and are saying I’m the number one linebacker recruit in the class.”
The 6-foot-3, 195-pound Johnson said he’s likely to play either outside linebacker or defensive end at the next level. In addition to his I-State offer, he also has one from Cincinnati.
Johnson had been scheduled to take a trip to Ames last weekend, but says that’s now been moved to a later date.
“I’m going to talk with the coaches to find out a good time to make it down there this spring,” he said.
Even without having been to campus, Johnson said he already has a good idea about what ISU brings on and off the field.
“I would like to major in Mechanical Engineering and they have a nice field for that,” he said. “As far as the campus and football facilities, I saw a video on YouTube of the players making a tour of the facilities and it looked pretty nice. I can’t wait to get down there and see it in person. The stadium also looked pretty impressive in the video.”
Earlier in the month of February, Johnson said he took unofficial visits to Kentucky, Miami (Ohio) and Cincinnati.
