I am hearing more and more mentions by people that our base defense may be a 3-4, or 3-3-1 this year. That may be a reason for Cousins leaving - or not. Evidently, the number 1 defensive line seems to be Pierson and Taylor at the DE's and Tucker at the nose tackle. That leaves guys like Garcia, Aka and maybe Trent competing with Cousins for snaps at the Nose. There has be very little talk of Leath's progress, that I can see.
My concern is that the DE or DT position is thin behind Pierson and Tucker. Thomas will be quality backup for these two, but beyond that there is no experience and little size. In addition, Linebacker is not a position of experience and having a viable 2 deep at 4 positions has to be more difficult than a viable 2 deep at 3 positions, an many of linebackers are average to smallish in size.
Can someone tell me more about how a 3-4 (3-3-1) scheme would theoretically help our scheme and success? And am I forgetting any linemen that may be a factor?
Going away from the 4-3 is the only thing that makes sense of Cousins leaving over playing time.
