I would bet if someone with a lot of time and skill ran the numbers they would find the most successful coaches have been offensive coordinators. Bill Snyder, Urban Meyer, Bill Spurrier, Art Brilles, Jim Harbaugh, etc.
From my unimportant perspective a guy that has been a high level QB is the best choice in many more situations than a Defensive guy. The QB has to know the opponents defense and how to exploit it, the defensive guy is simply a guy who has to identify what is going on in his own little sphere and react to it.
So if I am on the selection committee this time around I am going for a former Pro QB with coaching experience.
