Now that he has his college decision out of the way, a Sunshine State defensive back has his eyes on accomplishing big things during his senior year.
St. Petersburg (Fla.) senior Anthony Johnson, who committed to the Cyclones in mid May after taking an unofficial visit, opens his final high school season in less than two weeks.
“I’m looking forward to getting out there this year,” said Johnson. “I’m trying to get eight picks, which would get me more than 20 career picks. I want to get first-team all-state and help my team make it to state this year. We’re coming off a 9-2 season and have a lot of skill guys and offensive linemen coming back.”
The 6-foot-1, 160-pound Johnson will be fulfilling a number of roles for the Green Devils this fall, playing cornerback, safety, strong safety, running back, slot wide receiver. He’ll also be returning punts and kickoffs.
“I hit the weight room strong this offseason and got better overall,” he said.
Johnson said he’s remained in steady contact with the Cyclone coaching staff since making his decision and is happy to follow along on social media.
“Everything is good between me and the coaching staff,” he said. “They’re asking me about my senior season, we’re communicating and they’re sharing videos with me that they post on Twitter. We talk about training camp and I like what they’re doing. They run the same defense as my high school and sometimes play with five or six defensive backs on the field.”
Although he’ll be playing all over the gridiron for St. Petersburg this fall, Johnson said he’ll be focused on one spot once he arrives in Ames.
“As far as I’m concerned, I’m going with the number one wide receiver, so I think I’ll be an outside corner,” he said.
An official visit date has not yet been set by Johnson, but he believes it will be during the winter months. He also said he won’t be signing until February.
“I’m going to come up there a week before signing day when they bring up all their recruits that are committed,” Johnson said. “I’ll go up there with my mom, meet all the commits and the families will get to connect.”
At the time of Johnson’s commitment, he had G5 offers from Bowling Green, Buffalo, Marshall, South Florida, Tulane and Western Kentucky.
