Iowa State has jumped into the fray with a Texas high school defensive back that has two other Power-5 offers.
League City Clear Springs’ Langston Frederick, who attends the same high school as former Cyclone cornerback Sam E. Richardson, said he picked up an offer from the Cyclones on May 18.
“They came up to the school for me the day we were maxing out,” Frederick said. “They watched me backpedal, get out of my breaks and how my hips were. They saw me doing that, and then a few days later they direct-messaged me and told me they’d like to offer.”
The 5-foot-10, 175-pound Frederick said he heard some positive feedback from the coaching staff following the offer.
“I’ve stayed in touch with the coaches,” Frederick said. “I got to talk to the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach. I got to talk to the whole defensive coaching staff the other day. They just passed the phone around.
“They liked how I could come down in hit on film, my speed and ball-hawking abilities. They really liked how I could get out of my breaks. They told me they play a five defensive backs package and said I could fit into any one of those positions. They really liked my versatility a lot.”
ISU now would like to get Frederick on campus in the coming months for a visit.
“They told me they’re really excited about me and are looking forward to having me up at the campus over the summertime,” he said. “I told them I’d be up there, but I don’t know when. I’m the one who pays for it, so I’ve started talking it over with my dad and uncle.”
Frederick said he’s still in the early stages of his recruitment and isn’t close to making any decisions.
“I just picked up Missouri on Friday and that’s the most recent (offer),” Frederick said. “I also have offers from Michigan State, UTSA, McNeese State and North Texas. I don’t have a list of favorites at this point. I’m just going to play out the process.”
