Iowa State got some help from former Oregon State quarterback Kyle Kempt for the 2016 season, and is looking at another former offensive player from the school in next year’s recruiting class.
Wide receiver Datrin Guyton, who played in eight games for the Beavers last fall after redshirting in 2014, will play this season at Iowa Western. He picked up an offer from the Cyclones on February 13th.
The 6-foot-5, 182-pound Guyton signed with the Reivers last month and has seen his recruitment from FBS programs steadily pick up since landing in Council Bluffs. He took an unofficial visit to ISU recently.
“They said they want me to be a part of their class and that I’m at the top of the recruiting board,” said Guyton, who caught 14 passes for 178 yards before being dismissed from the team for violating athletic department and team rules.
“I’ve spoken with both Coach (Matt) Campbell and Coach (Bryan) Gasser and I think very highly of the program and it seems like a good environment to be in.”
Guyton currently has offers from I-State and Syracuse, and said he’ll be able to transfer out of Iowa Western following the upcoming season. He’ll have two seasons of eligible to exhaust over the next two years.
The Cyclone coaching staff is targeting Guyton to be playmaker down the field.
“They really like my ability to play outside and exploit man-to-man coverages,” Guyton said.
As a senior at Austin (Texas) Manor High School, Guyton was a Class 4A second-team all-state selection after catching 44 passes for 1,058 yards and 14 touchdowns. He added three more touchdowns as a kickoff return man. He picked the Beavers over an offer from TCU.
