A defensive tackle from an Indianapolis (Ind.) high school named his three favorites – a list that included Iowa State – near the end of April and that list has remained the same through the opening couple weeks of spring evaluations.
Ben Davis Class of 2017 defender LeShaun Minor was on campus for Iowa State’s spring game and said the program’s defensive line coach has been a frequent visitor to his school during the current evaluation period.
“Things are going great with Iowa State,” said Minor, who also lists Indiana and Minnesota as tri-favorites. “I just saw Coach (Eli) Rasheed this morning at our workouts. I’m actually texting back and forth with him right now. I’ve also kept in close contact with Coach Campbell. They’ve told me to keep grinding and getting better at what I’m doing. Coach Rasheed has zeroed me in on what I can do better my game still, and I always need that.
“This has been about the third time they’ve been at my school this spring and Coach Rasheed was in here last week, too. They are really high on both me and my teammate Esezi (Otomewo), showing real big interest in us.”
The 6-foot-3, 260-pound Minor said his trip to Ames with Otomewo made a lasting impression.
“I was really happy with what I saw,” he said. “When I got around the campus, it was like ‘wow’. It’s really a place I can see myself playing at. When I pulled up for the spring game, the coaches were pointing out all of the fans there. It was only the spring game and the fans were out there tailgating and all that.”
ISU’s coaching staff has also made an effort to connect Minor with current defensive end Pierre Aka, who is an Indianapolis native and attended Pike High School.
“I met a few of the other defensive line players and Coach Rasheed introduced me to one of the other Pike players that’s there now, Pierre Aka,” Minor said. “I’m going to follow him on Twitter and talk to him about Iowa State.”
With time in the Cyclones’ weight program, coaches see Minor as a future contributor along the interior line.
“They see me playing around the same spot I am right now, defensive tackle, playing some three-technique and five-technique,” Minor said. “Coach Rasheed likes how I play with my hands, my motor and how I never quit on a play. If I overrun the quarterback, I get right back to it.”
Minor appears ready to make a decision in the near-future, now that he’s zeroed in on three schools.
“I’m going to take a few more visits to get everything good,” he said. “I’ll probably visit Iowa State one more time, because the first time going down there I really liked it.”
