One of the Cyclones' top in-state targets for the Class of 2018 was on campus yesterday for a pre-season scrimmage.

Creston rising junior Trevor Downing said he enjoyed the practice experience and visit with Iowa State's head coach.

"It was pretty smooth how they ran things," said Downing, whose lone offer to this point is from ISU. "They didn't play Mike Warren, (Allen Lazard) and all that stuff, but it went pretty well. I also enjoyed seeing how big the training room was. That was pretty neat.

"I talked to Coach (Matt) Campbell and he's a pretty cool guy. He wants me to get back up there for a few football games. We talked about the upcoming seasons and how we're doing this year."

Although he was speaking with Campbell during the offensive line meeting, the 6-foot-4, 270-pound lineman said he liked what he saw from position coach and coordinator Tom Manning.

"He knows what he's talking about and has the skills to get you to the next level," Downing said.

It's still early in the recruiting process for Downing, but the offensive lineman says the Cyclones are in great position.

"I'd say they're probably up at the top and I think Coach Campbell knows that too," Downing said. "He wanted to make it a top priority to get Iowa State up there on my list. Iowa State would be my choice right now if I had to say."

However, Downing said he's in no hurry to make an early commitment.

"I'm just going to let it play out," he said. "I'm just focused on this season and what I'm going to do."

Downing said he's also hearing from Iowa and Northern Iowa.
