A Minnesota prep tight end with great bloodlines visited Iowa State earlier this season and picked up an offer from the program last month.
Fridley Totino Grace junior Joe Alt, whose father John enjoyed a 13-season NFL career with the Kansas City Chiefs after playing at the University of Iowa, traveled to Ames for the Oklahoma State game and made a positive impression on the coaching staff.
“They were probably one of the first schools that started contacting me back in mid-September,” said Alt, whose older brother Mark is also a professional hockey player in the Colorado Avalanche organization. “They invited me down to a game in October and we had been in vague communication. I went down there and I was really accepted. They were very nice to me and I really enjoyed my time there. I enjoyed the atmosphere with the coaches and the game. It’s really an upbeat vibe there and I enjoyed it.
“I like how they use their tight ends and really enjoyed the variety of ways they use them. They use three tight ends in some sets and that’s great to see. They use the tight ends in many different routes and blocking schemes. They called me about two Sundays ago and told me I had an offer.”
The 6-foot-7, 240-pound Alt, who said he was particularly impressed with the versatility shown by Cyclone tight end Dylan Soehner, said he heard from Assistant Director of Scouting Josh Rosenthal a short time after his stop.
“He said they really enjoyed my film and really enjoyed me as a person at the visit,” Alt said. “They like me and my family, think I’m a really good person and athlete, so they decided to offer. They think I have really good size, hands and great talent. My dad played in the NFL, so they think I have really good potential with my size.”
Reflecting back on his day in Ames, Alt said the experience made a good first impression on him.
“I really like their new facilities and they’re doing a bunch of changes and upgrades,” he said. “They’re all very nice. I like the stadium and how the fans are really behind the players and support them. The team is up and coming and has some great seasons ahead.”
According to the 2021 prospect, tight end coach Alex Golesh and Rosenthal will be visiting him at school on Tuesday and also plan to watch a basketball game over the next few months. Alt is also planning a return visit for a Junior Day this winter.
