An in-state prospect in the 2019 recruiting class said Cyclone coaches are expected at a pair of his basketball games in the next week.

Cedar Falls linebacker Jack Campbell has been recruited hard by Iowa State since being offered prior to his junior year. He said the coaches are still saying and doing all of the right things.

“I’m still hearing the same stuff from Iowa State, about how I’m their priority,” said Campbell. “I’m still talking to them weekly. They just say they’re building something special and can see me playing any of the linebacker positions with my body type. They really want me.

“Our relationship is as good as it’s been. They’re going to come to my basketball games, so that’s kind of cool. They always text me before and after games, so that’s pretty cool.”

Campbell said head coach Matt Campbell and linebacker coach Tyson Veidt will be visiting for basketball games tonight against Dubuque Senior and next Tuesday versus Iowa City West.

The 6-foot-4, 210-pound Campbell, who also has Power-5 offers from Iowa and Minnesota, said he was impressed by what the Cyclones showed on the field in 2017.

“That was definitely really cool,” he said. “Going into it I really didn’t know what to expect, but after the season I was really impressed with how they became so competitive and really good. They showed that they can make it into the top-25 and I think that’s great.”

Especially on defense, Campbell said he can see himself slotting in well as one of the team’s linebackers if he chooses to sign there in the 2019 class.

“They said if I go up there, they’ll put me wherever they need me,” he said. “They said I can play any linebacker spot, so it just depends on what I come in as. The Cyclone defense was one of the best defenses in the Big 12. They held the Memphis offense to under its season averages. It’s pretty cool that most all of their linebackers made all-Big 12, so that kind of sticks out to me.

“I like the scheme and how sometimes they blitz, sometimes they’re in pass coverage and sometimes man-to-man. I think I can fit in that scheme pretty well. It’s obviously working, because they’re slowing down Big 12 offenses which are pretty powerful.”

The junior prospect, who took an unofficial visit for the Kansas game this season, is expecting to make another stop in Ames in March or April during spring practice.
