House File 802 awaits Governor Reynolds signature. I'm a fool for thinking we can have a rational discussion about an issue like this on this board, but I'm giving it a shot in the hopes I learn something. I know we've had some teachers on this board in the past that may have dealt with this first hand in their schools or classrooms. So what's it all about?
The bill according to the Register would ban classroom instruction and government diversity trainings from teaching certain concepts, such as that America is systemically racist or sexist.
I admit that my first reading of news accounts of Critical Race Theory is that it sounded like it is something that would create more division between the races. it didn't sound like something that would bring us closer together. I've seen a lot of progress in bridging that divide in my lifetime, but the last year or more have seemed to send things heading in the wrong direction.
On the other hand, I just happened to be listening to the podcast 1864 which deals with events and personalities in the post Civil War time period. I was never a big history buff as a student, but what was happening in the aftermath of the Civil War was shameful. How that laid the groundwork for race relations today is an interesting and uncomfortable topic. It is odd to me how the party that freed the slaves has lost the support of black voters in today's world. I wondered if the Republican Party was pushing for black voting rights for political reasons. It is much like how I wonder if opening the border is being done to get more Democratic voters.
But back to Critical Race Theory. Enlighten me on what this is and what is good about it and what is bad about it. Let's have a rational discussion about it and not let it fly off the rails.
