Friday afternoon basking in the sun while waiting outside our hotel for the shuttle to the Sprint Center, I hear someone of say "Go Cyclones" & look up to see it was TCU coach Trent Johnson. I congratulated him on his win & that started a fun 5 minute chat. During our exchange he said he tried recruiting Fred to Stanford when he was assistant coach there. He said "The Mayor made the right decision." He also said he's become friends with the Hoibergs from being with them on summer Nike trips & he's been jokingly urging Fred's wife to take the big NBA money & run. Trent was funny, engaging & genuine, a very different impression than you get when watching him coaching in the heat of the battle on tv.
Last year I had a similar chance encounter with former ISU & KSU AD Max Urick. Sorry for the length of this post but it's experiences like these that make this event so special.
