I actually thought the team came out ready to play. The team came out with lots of energy on defense. A fake punt and onside kick were clearly part of the game plan; one executed well, one not. The drive which ended with the option fumble was a textbook drive - had possession a long time, keeping clock running and Boykin and Co. off the field. Unfortunately, lack of execution and poor fundamentals led to the TO. What a huge momentum swing.
Unfortunately football is a 4-quarter game. Eventually, the bells and whistles, and best-laid plans, are exhausted. The game boils down to which side has more talented, fast, and powerful players, and how sharply do you execute when you have the ball. More times than not ISU is going to be less talented, and execution has been lacking on both sides of the ball. Sam is not executing at a high enough rate to keep the offense moving/scoring, and there have been lots of breakdowns in coverage by the back seven over the last two weeks. Not a recipe for W's.
