I am not a football coach. I use to coach HS basketball and baseball in a time long ago. But I was fortunate to see a lot of successful coaches in a lot of sports. They have some things in common across sports. To me the good coaches do the following among others:
1. They remain calm at crucial times when games are being decided.
2. Their teams do not beat themselves.
3. They maximize the talent they have.
4. They have a system. They are not the same, but they coach to the system. And in college they recruit to the system.
5. Still, they have flexibility to modfy, tweak or whatever their system to put their current players in the best position to win.
6. Their teams just execute.
7. Their assistants do their jobs and have the support of the head coach.
8. Their players are disciplined and rarely lose control.
9. Finally, they will beat you, all things being equal.
I think my point is that the right coach can make a difference. No more coordinators. This should not be a training program.
