Iowa State is close to securing an unofficial visit from a talented safety prospect from a Cincinnati, Ohio, high school.
LaSalle three-star junior TreSean Smith has been in close contact with a number of Cyclone coaches, who would like to get the Class of 2017 recruit to Ames.
“I talk to Coach (Bryan) Gasser, Coach (Tyson) Veidt and Coach (Matt) Campbell often, almost like every other day,” said Smith. “We’re just trying to find the right time for me to come visit. We’re still talking that over with my family. I don’t know if I can do it this month, but it will be coming up in the near future. That’s like my top school that I’m trying to get out to. They’ve been recruiting me hard and we’ve built a great relationship.”
The 6-foot-3, 180-pound Smith took notice when the Cyclones signed a pair of Cincinnati preps in February, and wants to see for himself what the program is about.
“I really like that they’re recruiting the area and getting guys like David Montgomery and Deshaunte Jones to come out there and play for them at the next level,” Smith said. “If they get some great athletes like them, I may be interested in Iowa State as well.
“The coaches have told me a lot about the program in general, the defense and the types of guys they’re liking for. They said I’m one of those guys they’re looking for to come in and make an impact on the football program. They’ve told me about the facilities, everything they have to offer and how I need to come check out all that Iowa State has to offer.”
Smith would likely slot in as a safety at I-State.
“The coaches said they like guys that like to fly around and make big plays,” Smith said. “I can come downhill, make a tackle and make a game-altering play. I can make an interception and fly around the field making plays everywhere. Those are the types of guys they’re looking for.”
In addition to the one he has from ISU, Smith has Power-5 offers from Louisville and Syracuse. He also has several offers from MAC-level programs.
Smith doesn’t sound like a recruit that’s close to making a decision.
“I haven’t really thought about that yet,” he said. “I don’t have a list of top schools. A lot of places have been recruiting me. I know I want to get around and do some more visits. I want to let the recruiting process take care of itself. I don’t have a deadline yet.”
